Calling

I left church the other day with my ears ringing,

so I answered the phone.

“Hello?” I said, but I heard no one–

only more ringing.

Odd, I thought,

yawning though it was noon,

Who would be calling at this hour?

and I went home and slept.

Later that day, I got another call.

“Hello?”

This time I heard a still, small voice.

“Do you believe any of that?”

“Believe what?” I asked.

“Good,” said the voice,

“now go out and love your neighbor.”

I like having these conversations.

I think I’ll go back next week!
